NETS-S 2C: Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats.
Essential Questions:
*Essential Questions for Students:
  • Is it important to listen to the other side of a argument, or both sides to the story, to get a different perspective, so we can make our final decisions? Also, why is it important to hear both sides of an argument while debating a topic?
  • Is it good only to get information from one source if we are trying to research a topic? Why is it not good to only rely on one resource while searching for information?
Objectives:
Students will write a 2 paragraph essay about a position they must take on a certain topic chosen at random (brown paper bag), and will then present their position/essay to the class.
Tools and Resources:
Rationale:
It is important for students to learn to take a position on a topic and be able to research that topic from various resources and present their findings, since most life decisions make people take a stand or position on a topic.

Anticipatory Questions/Activity:
Oral Anticipatory Set Questions/Activity:

  • Do you think we should go to school all year? Why or why not?
  • Have you ever had to take a position on a topic or decision?

Includes sample feedback loop)
*What does it mean when we take a position on something?
  • Student Answer:
    • We are talking about whether we are for or against that topic.
*Is it important to listen to both sides of the story?
  • Student Answer:
    • Yes!

*Vocabulary:

  • Position
  • Agree
  • Disagree
Segment #3

*Students will have to write a 2 paragraph essay on their for or against topic, which will be presented at another given time.
Segment #4
(Detailed directions on how to complete activity)
1.) Start with the Oral Anticipatory Set Questions/Activity:

  • Here is a question that I want you to think about for a couple minutes until I get the Prezi up. Here's the question: Do you think we should go to school all year? Why or why not?
    • Acceptable Student Answers:
      • Answers will vary.
      • While students are thinking about the question/activity bring up the Prezi teaching portion of lesson (click the link below; you will have to jump back and forth between this lesson plan and the prezi; P indicates Prezi and LP indicates Lesson Plan, also to play the prezi click on the link and then click on the Taking a Position On a Given Topic, and then when you click that scroll over where it says more (right hand side) and choose fullscreen, it should start playing):
  • LP: You all had extremely good answers and reasons why we should or should not go to school all year! Have you ever had to make a decision or take a position on a topic before?
    • Student Answers:
      • Yes! You just gave us one!
  • LP: Wow, very good! You are all very observant. Now let's turn this way to the Prezi, which is a presentation!
  • P: Go to Prezi (this is going to be your teaching, to work prezi just have to click on the link and start the show, and click the blue arrow at the bottom right side of the screen).
  • P: When you get done with the Prezi, end the presentation by right-clicking and clicking end presentation.
(The Prezi Lesson should only take 10-15 minutes)
  • LP: Now that we know what debating is and all the information and steps we have to do about a debate, we are going to write a 2 paragraph paper on the position on the topic that you will pick from this brown paper bag! (Sound excited, shake bag around)
  • Some of you will have the same topics, but that's alright, maybe we'll get to hear two different sides of the story or topic!
  • Let students take turns picking topics, once everyone has a topic please give these directions:
    • Directions:
      • Now that we all have our topics, we must decide whether we agree or disagree with our topics!
        • When we agree with a topic we are what?
          • Acceptable Student Answer:
            • We like the topic!
        • When we disagree with a topic we are what?
          • Student Answer:
            • We don't like the topic!
        • Very good! So, since we all have our topics we now have to take a minute and think to ourselves, do I like agree with my topic or do I disagree with my topic? (Let students think for 3-5 seconds)
        • While we are writing we have to think of the rubric that you're going to be graded on (pass out rubric and go over it with students)
        • Okay so now we thought about our position, we are going to write a 2 paragraph essay on our position, and we have to mention the other side of the story too, in at least one or two sentences and reply back to our original position.
        • We are going to use the computers in helping us find some information on our topics that we have randomly picked, so that way we can get more confident in our answer if we agree or disagree with our topic.
        • When you are done using the computer please return to your seat and write your 2 paragraph essay which will be collected at the end of our English portion of the day.
        • When everyone has turned their position topic essay we will present them tomorrow for the class!
(Allow students the rest of the time period to write their responses/essays; try to get 10 minutes computer time, and 30 minutes for actual writing time! Give time limit warnings if you have to!)
